Abstract

High cost users (HCU) of healthcare are defined as the small numbers of patients who account for a disproportionately large proportion of healthcare costs. Gaining a better understanding of HCU is of major policy interest to the health care system. Accordingly, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) have recently developed a dynamic cohort of complex high system users, including a subset cohort of HCU that account for the top 10% of acute care hospital costs for the years 2011-12 to 2014-15. The aim is to examine the proportion of total acute care costs that are related to CVD in a cohort of adult patients identified as HCU by CIHR/CIHI in Alberta.
