Abstract

Just before Christmas 1944, Adolph Hitler ordered his generals to launch a sudden massive mechanized infantry attack on allied forces. Subsequently referred to as the “Battle of the Bulge,” the Nazis quickly surrounded the outnumbered and outgunned Americans of the 101st Airborne Division at the small town of Bastogne and demanded their unconditional surrender. A defiant Brigadier General Anthony McAuliffe befuddled the Germans with his terse response: “nuts.”
