Abstract

This volume evolved from a conference on Adam Easton organised by Joan Greatrex and Christopher de Hamel at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, in April 2014. The book, edited by Miriam Wendling, begins with an introduction detailing the life and significance of Easton by Greatrex. Her unmatched knowledge of Benedictine cathedral chapters and Benedictine colleges at Oxford helps highlight the stages and settings of Easton’s career. The remainder of the book is a series of essays on different aspects of Easton’s life, activities and influence. The first essay, by Patrick Zutshi, is a detailed exposition of Easton’s role as witness, then as cardinal, during the papal schism and the pontificates of Urban VI and Boniface IX. Lynda Dennison’s article on the dating and origin of Cambridge, Corpus Christi College MS 180, which contains a copy of Richard Fitzralph’s De pauperie Salvatoris that belonged to Easton, establishes that Easton acquired the manuscript...
