Abstract

The cardiac surgical unit advanced life support (CALS) course was developed to meet the need for a protocol in arrest and peri-arrest situations specific to cardiothoracic patients in the intensive care unit. Basic life support, advanced life support, and advanced trauma life support courses have enabled members of intensive care teams to adopt recognisable roles in a well rehearsed and ordered way, and the same can now be extended to help patients who undergo arrest after cardiac surgery. This course fills an important gap by addressing the unique circumstances of postoperative cardiac patients. Any healthcare professional working in a cardiothoracic intensive care unit.
