Abstract

The National Heart Foundation of Australia runs a national register of all cardiac surgery performed in Australia. A summary of the most recent annual report, published in 1996 and detailing 1993 data, is presented. During 1993 a total of 18,936 cardiac procedures were performed, representing a 10.7% increase compared to the previous year. Mortality was low at 2.5%, similar to past years. There was a 13.3% rise in coronary artery bypass graft procedures (14,638 during 1993), with a mortality rate of 1.6% and a reoperation rate of 7.7%. Valve operations also increased markedly for most types of valves. The register in its present form can provide valuable information on basic trends in cardiac surgery in Australia. An improved database is being planned.
