Abstract

1. 1. Voluntarily diving turtles ( Trachemys scripta elegans) showed a mean reduction in heart rate of 28%. It occurred immediately, and was stable. 2. 2. When the same animals were forcibly submerged, the maximum reduction in heart rate averaged 92%. The rate decreased slowly, taking an average of 33 min to reach its nadir, and then increased and became stable for the remainder of the dive. However, even once regular the mean reduction in rate remained intense at 53%. 3. 3. The more severe bradycardia with forced submersion appears to be due to the fright associated with such dives.
