Abstract

Abstract Cardiac response to participation in tennis, badminton, golf, archery, and bowling was obtained by telemetering heart rates during exercise. These heart rates, together with rectal temperatures and recovery heart rates, were studied in an attempt to determine the relative strenuousness of these sports and to classify them according to work load. Tennis and badminton proved to be significantly more strenuous than golf, archery, and bowling and were classified as moderate work. Golf was significantly more strenuous than archery and bowling, but none of these required a mean heart rate higher than 106 and were consequently classified as light work. Heart rates recorded at the end of 20 min. were compared with those recorded at the end of the game or match in question. In every case except golf, which was played over a 2-hr. period, results of the 20-min. sample were similar to those of the total game.
