Abstract

Cardiac rehabilitation has been advocated as a measure to ameliorate the psychological and physical condition of the patient with myocardial infarction [1–3]. The study of Sanne [4] was the first controlled study, but the follow-up period was too short to show a definite effect on the prognosis. The study which was undertaken in our center was the first that showed a positive effect on prognosis by a reduction of 50% in coronary events in the 5 years after a first myocardial infarction (Fig. 1) [5]. As we in that study could not find any effect of cardiac rehabilitation [6] and angina pectoris proved to be the major determinant in return to work after myocardial infarction (Table 1), we decided to evaluate the effect of coronary artery surgery on work resumption.
