Abstract

Cardiac output was determined on unanesthetized adult male and female white Leghorn chickens by the Stewart-Hamilton dilution technique, using T-1824. Blood pressures were determined and central blood volume and peripheral resistance were calculated. Cardiac outputs for males and females were 143 and 173 ml/kg/min., respectively, and the difference was highly significant. Peripheral resistances (TPRU) were 1.23 and .88/kg for males and females. Central blood volumes averaged 34.6 and 26.7 ml for males and females or 14.4 and 14.9 ml/kg, respectively.
