Abstract

While the histological appearance of carcinoid tumors can be somewhat variable, there have been no reported difficulties in distinguishing carcinoid from primary liver-cell carcinoma on a histological basis. Dr. Stanton Eversole, who diagnosed the case reported, states that the diagnosis of primary liver carcinoma can be firmly established on histological grounds when the tissue sample is adequate. "Hepatoma" is a generic term referring to tumors of the liver. Malignant tumors in this category should be further classified as bile-duct-cell tumor, liver-cell tumor, or mixed in type. The case reported by me appeared to have the histological characteristics of a primary liver-cell carcinoma.
