Abstract

Gastric juice of normal individuals and subjects with gastric cancer contain a carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA)-like substance which is perchloric acid soluble and destroyed by pepsin. This material has antigenic activity in CEA radioimmunoassay and gives a cross reaction with CEA in rocket line immunoelectrophoresis. It has an apparent mol. wt of 180, 000, as determined by gel chromatography. This CEA-like substance may represent true CEA or a new member of the CEA glycoprotein family. It may be one of the normal materials that interfere with cancer specificity of the CEA test.
