Abstract

This communication gives the results obtained in the carbonylation of ..cap alpha..-olefins and tertiary alcohols. Results indicated that boron trifluoride monohydrate is an efficient catalyst for the carbonylation of tertiary alcohols by ethyl formate at atmospheric pressure and a temperature of 50-60/sup 0/C, the products being the ethyl esters of ..cap alpha..,..cap alpha..-branched carboxylic acids. The carbonylation of ..cap alpha..-olefins in the presence of this catalyst is less efficient. The mechanism of the carbonylation of olefins and alcohols with ethyl formate at atmospheric pressure has been established by using BF/sub 3/.D/sub 2/O as the catalyst.
