Abstract
Carbon-14 self-diffusion was studied in single crystals of the disordered compound V 6C 5 (i.e. VC 0.84). The diffusion coefficients can be represented by the expression D c * = ( 2⋅65 − 0 ⋅ 31 + 0 ⋅ 35 ) exp − ( 85 , 000 ± 500 R T ) c m 2 / sec , in the temperature range from 1700 to 2200°C. The results are compared to carbon self-diffusion in the carbides of titanium and zirconium. It is shown that the kinetics and mechanism of carbon self-diffusion in the monocarbides of titanium, vanadium and zirconium exhibit a familial pattern which probably can be extended to remaining monocarbides of the group IVb and Vb transition elements as well.
