Abstract

During the development of most hexapod embryos, lipid material constitutes the major energy catabolite (Kinsella 1966a). Gravimetric lipid changes during egg development have been recorded for various insects including the large milkweed bug Oncopeltus fasciatus (Dallas) (Babcock and Rutschky 1961, Kinsella and Smyth 1966, Yurkiewicz and Oelsner 1969). Kinsella (1966b) made a general qualitative study of changing lipid patterns during the life cycle of O. fasciatus . Nevertheless, little is known about the changes in the particular substances being metabolized by the milkweed bug embryo. Although the triglyceride carbon number distribution and fatty acid composition of several insect species have been determined (Wood et al. 1969, Harlow et al. 1969), this structural analysis of triglycerides has only now been extended to include developing hexapod eggs. The present communication compares the carbon number distribution and fatty acid composition of the triglycerides of adult milkweed bugs and eggs at various stages of development.
