Abstract

In a suicide attempt, a 35-year-old man connected a hose from the car exhaust pipe to the passenger compartment of his car and ran the engine for 2 hours. The patient presented to the emergency department asymptomatic. Immediately 100% oxygen is administered and blood is drawn to determine an initial carboxyhemoglobin level and for toxicology screens for aspirin, acetaminophen, and ethanol. The patient refuses an EKG. His initial carboxyhemoglobin level is 18.4%. The patient's social history includes cigarette smoking. After 6 hours of observation, the patient remains asymptomatic.
