Abstract
SUMMARY Cats were killed by exhaust fumes from a motor vehicle or by 70% CO2 + 30% O2. The duration of the procedures and the cats’ behaviour were registered by videotape recording, including electronic timing. The cuthanasia was divided into three phases according to measurable criteria of animal behaviour. The second of these phases, which from a welfare point of view is very important, lasted with exhaust fumes for less than 10 sec. This is significantly shorter than in the similar procedure with CO2 + O2. The total process with exhaust fumes took about 56 sec and with CO2 + O2 about 90 sec. During the initial phase of cuthanasia, which lasted about 32 sec, the cats’ behaviour seemed almost unaffected by the exhaust fumes, while CO2 + O2 apparently affected their behaviour in a way which may be interpreted as discomfort.
