Abstract

Abstract Carbon field emission display (carbon FED) could be an alternative technology for large panel applications. We will first review the advantages and the requirements of carbon FEDs compared with other technologies such as spindt microtips and, more recently, canon surface conduction electron emitters. Key issues will then be presented and illustrated with a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) carbon film. Based on the deposition parameters optimization, an operating area for FED will be defined. Finally, the first results obtained with an amorphous carbon cathode will be given and discussed.
