Abstract
From direct measurements of the concentration of carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere and ocean water, the average rate of exchange of CO2 per unit pressure difference and area across the atmosphere-ocean boundary from 30°N to 30°S in the Pacific Ocean is estimated to be 18 moles/(cm2 atm yr). This figure agrees approximately with the global average value deduced from radiocarbon measurements and supports a belief that the measurements of CO2, upon which the new estimate depends, have been established with a fairly high degree of precision.
