Abstract

We propose a carbon dioxide (CO <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sub> ) gas sensor using an SPR (surface plasmon resonance) sensing scheme with an ionic liquid. In this study, we used [EMIM][BF <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">4</sub> ] as an ionic liquid. The permittivity of the liquid increased when it absorbs CO <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sub> gas. This permittivity change was detected by the SPR sensing scheme. We confirmed that our proposed sensor was able to measure CO <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sub> gas with a concentration as low as 700 ppm.
