Abstract

• Carbon coated nanoscale La-Mg alloy are constructed through a facile strategy; • The hydrogen ab/desorption kinetics were improved; • The dehydrogenation active energy was reduced significantly. Herein, carbon layer coated La-Mg intermetallic nanocrystallines were constructed via a facile process for an enhanced hydrogen storage performance. The hydrogen desorption capacity of carbon-covered sample after ten cycles was 3.5 wt.%, which was four times as high as that for the original. The coated sample presented the higher hydrogen storage capacity, lower dehydrogenation temperature and activity energy. Otherwise, the compositions and microstructures of the various samples were also investigated.
