Abstract

The abundance distribution of positively charged carbon cluster ions from a laser-induced plasma is investigated as a function of the laser power density. The electronic structure of linear and cyclic carbon clusters were calculated using the LCAO-X α method. The observed mass spectra of positive and negative C n cluster ions are interpreted on the basis of calculated binding energies of the carbon clusters. The cross-over from even—odd alternation to a four-periodicity in the cluster-ion intensities of mass spectra of graphite could be explained as a transition from linear to cyclic C n clusters, confirming previous predictions from other authors.
