Abstract

Carbon isotope exchange between dissolved HCO 3 − and finest-grained solid CaCO 3 in saline water has been studied using radioactive carbon-14 as tracer. An almost complete exchange was observed after six to eight weeks contact of the two phases. Experiments with water enriched in 18O showed that the oxygen isotopes exchange in the same way as the carbon isotopes. From the experimental results of the δ 13C-values of the different phases a fractionation value of ε = +1.6 ± 0.3 was obtained for δ CaCO 3 -δ HCO 3 − in isotopic equilibrium at +14°C temperature.
