Abstract
The physiological behaviour of the two isolates ofAlternaria solani from tomato and potato in respect of growth under different carbon and nitrogen sources was studied. It was found, in general, that the tomato isolate utilised the hexoses, disaccharides and sugar alcohols. Mannitol was the best among the carbon sources. The potato isolate was found to utilise well the hexose sugars and disaccharides as carbon sources. An inter-dependence of carbon and nitrogen sources was found in many instances. The behaviour of the two isolates differed widely in the utilisation of the organic acids, tartaric acid and citric acid, as carbon sources.
