Abstract
It appears that gamma-crystallin of calf lens has more bound sugar than either alpha- or beta-crystallins. The various fractions of gamma-crystallin obtained from three different methods of the preparation all were found to contain some carbohydrate. In the major fractions, the carbohydrate was composed of xylose, mannose, galactose, glucose and hexosamine, which were present in the same proportions. Under certain procedures of separating gamma-crystallin from the other two crystallins, a minor protein fraction was isolated that contained a large carbohydrate component made up principally of glucose.
