Abstract

Novel carbazole diol monomer with an electron acceptor group for nonlinear optics has been synthesized from 9-(4-hydroxybutyl)-3-formylcarbazole and bis(cyanoacetates). This monomer coploymerized with diisocyanate to give a new series of accordion polymers which contain carbazole moiety in a polymer main chain and hydrogen bonding between the polymer main chains. The polymers were obtained with molecular weights in the range of 6000-11000 and glass transition temperature (Tg) of 69°C-122°C. Films of these polymers were easily made on glass sabstrates by spin coating from chloroform solution. These polymer films can be poled at above Tg. The poled main-chain polymers indicate electric-field- induced alignment of carbazole moieties and second-order nonlinear optical responses.
