Abstract

Acetylcholine is a mammalian retinal transmitter (Masland and Mills, 1979). Muscarinic receptors linked to the second messengers inositol phosphates (InsPs)/diacylglycerol (Cuttcliffe and Osborne, 1978; Osborne, 1988) and cAMP (Ghazi and Osborne, 1989) have been located in the retina. Furthermore, binding studies have shown that at least two types of muscarinic receptors exist in the retina (Vanderheyden et al., 1988).
