Abstract

The general geology of the Cardoso group of islands in Southern São Paulo State is presented, with emphasis on the lithology and structure of the Proterozoic metasediments of the northern coast of the Cardoso island. The metasediments are composed of pelitic and psammitic layers, characterized by general EW trend of the bedding plane directions and local tectonic repetition due to tight folding and transposition. The most important structure of these rocks is the reliquiar bedding, paralel to a fine schistosity which grades to a crenulation cleavage in the main fold hinges. The metasediments are intruded by a Neoproterozoic pluton, composed of quartz allcali syenite to quartz syenite, which caused strong contact metamorphism of the host metasediments. AU other islands of the group belong to the intrusion, with exception of the Figueira island, which is composed of oligomictic metaconglomerates with quartz-hematitic matrix.
