Abstract

In this study a preliminary characterization was made for the fisheries of pirarucú (Arapaima gigas) in three Amazonian municipalities, and the main aspects investigated were the methodologies for preservation, the use of fishing habitat, and time devoted to the activity, among others. It was noted that the area of Carauari municipality is the only one studied where the local community believes that there is a possible recovery of the stock of the resource. It is also the sam e area where gillnets are less used in the fishery of pirarucu.
