Abstract

During the summers of 1965-66 when 15 traps equipped with blacklight fluorescent lamps were operated in Johnston County, North Carolina, in 3 ecological situations, woodland, cleared land, and woodland borders, 37 species of forest insects were captured in small to relatively large numbers. Data were obtained showing the months and the number of days and hours of captures. The insect families and the number of species of each taken were: Meloidae, Noctuidae, Lasiocampidae, Zanolidae, Megalopygidae, and Pyraustidae, 1 each; Curculionidae and Arctiidae, 2 each; Citheroniidae and Geometridae, 3 each; Cerambycidae and Saturniidae. 4 each; Notodonti dae. 6; and Sphingidae, 7. Traps attracting insects with blacklight lamps may be useful in surveys for and perhaps even in control of some forest insects.
