Abstract

Among the factors that determine the response a particular patient will have to various antihypertensive drugs, racial and environmental differences are increasingly being recognized as important. 1,2 The response to angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors with and without a diuretic in blacks and whites is well documented. 3 However, little information is available regarding the response of Orientals. 4 This study was designed to compare captopril (Capoten ®, Squibb Korea) as a single antihypertensive agent and captopril plus hydrochlorothiazide (Capozide ®, Squibb Korea) in Korean patients in a double-blind, controlled clinical trial to determine if one regimen is superior to the other in terms of efficacy or subjective adverse effects, or both.
