ABSTRACT Emerson Bainbridge was an important entrepreneur, philanthropist and (briefly) Liberal M.P. whose influence has been overlooked and under-estimated by historians. His wide-ranging industrial success, particularly in coal mining, and his growing personal wealth enabled him to play an important role in the North Midlands region particularly from 1890. His familial roots in Methodism and Temperance and his adherence to the main tenets of political nonconformity and Liberalism were the foundations of his ‘world view’. The impact and influence of this ‘enlightened paternalism’ long outlasted him.
