Abstract

Recent discussions of capitalism in agriculture suggest that the classical Marxist texts are outmoded These critiques, however, offer little in the way of empirical support for their claims. When data on the development of United States agriculture are examined they confirm the classical theorists. The development of American agriculture has been characterized by an increase in scale, in capital investment and in the importance of wage labor.
