Abstract

This panel symposium brings together a group of well-known scholars to debate what a different model of capitalism, or a different economic system altogether, might look like. The panel includes contributions by: Nancy Adler, Ed Freeman, Henry Mintzberg, Otto Scharmer, Paul Shrivastava, Adam Sulkowski, and Sandra Waddock. The main focus of the discussion will be on how to rethink the basic pillars of the capitalist system given its strong emphasis on ever-increasing growth, in particular considering the tension between constant growth and the ability to be sustainable. The panelists introduce their perspectives on rethinking capitalism focusing especially on (1) how the benefits of market competition can be balanced with its enormous costs (e.g., in the form of negative externalities) and (2) how governments can support emerging initiatives which can potentially play a transformative role (e.g., social movements). The panelists will briefly offer responses to others’ ideas and then the conversation will be turned over to the audience for their engagement with the question of alternatives to the current form of capitalism.
