Abstract

This year’s conference call draws attention to critical analysis of capitalism in contemporary society. In this paper, I develop a critical understanding of how capitalism plays out in management education at university business schools using Marx’s analysis of capitalism as a guide. Management education is especially entwined with the operation of modern capitalism, preparing the bulk of managers who populate the corporate landscape. In both absolute and relative measures, business schools and business graduates have grown substantially in size and number. Marx’s labour theory of value is introduced. Contemporary reviews of its validity and utility are briefly presented. Subsequently, I analyse the changing circumstances of universities, students, and faculty with an emphasis on the dynamics of capitalism related to the commodification of management education.
