Abstract

A new cellular system based on direct sequence spread spectrum code division multiple access (DS-SS-CDMA) and frequency division multiple access is proposed. The proposed CDMA/FDMA cellular system implements frequency reuse with a novel cell configuration to decrease the cochannel interference. A performance analysis was conducted for both the proposed system and the standard CDMA system under the same propagation pathloss and multipath fading. The multipath fading is modelled with a bounded Rayleigh distribution which allowed observation of the system performance under varying degrees of fading. It was observed that the proposed system increases the cell capacity by a factor of approximately seven for the forward link and from 5.8% to 20% for the reverse link.
