Abstract

Senior DP managers are no longer interested in the internal functional capabilities of computer systems. The systems are viewed only as the means of keeping the users satisfied, both in terms of the service they get and the associated costs. That is why DP planning and reporting is no longer simply a question of computer measurement, performance analysis and equipment planning but also of providing a total, integrated set of procedures to support management planning and control decisions. The senior management decisions do not any longer concern what equipment to buy from whom, or whether to buy any at all, but the quality and form of services to be provided to the business organization. Capacity management is now capable of providing DP organizations with a comprehensive support system, comprising formal plans, control information to verify plans, automated procedures, detailed databases and measurement consolidation; in short, of providing a decision support system to aid senior management in making the right decisions at the right time.
