Abstract

This paper examines the capacity bounds for a direct sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) system with forward error correction (FEC) coding in an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channel. Using Shannon's sphere-packing bounds, the capacity for this type of system as a function of the block size is shown. Furthermore, its analysis provides a comparison baseline for DS-CDMA communication channels. We compare these limits with the achievable capacity of a DS-CDMA system based on an iterative multiuser receiver (IMR).
