Abstract

DC capacitor voltage balancing issue is known as one main drawback in multilevel inverters. This paper presents an auxiliary circuit configuration with proportional-integral (PI) controller to balance the DC-link capacitor voltage of a five-level switch-sharing-based inverter. Capacitor voltage balancing is performed by a buck-boost chopper connected to the four capacitors of the above-mentioned inverter. PI controller is suggested for controlling the IGBT switches. Simulation of the buck-boost chopper and the inverter is performed by Matlab/Simulink software. Simulation result shows that the buck-boost chopper can balance the capacitor voltage of the five-level switch-sharing-based inverter at high modulation indexes.
