Abstract

Some negative-sense RNA viruses prime mRNA transcription using host 5' cap sequences, usurping host translational machinery and evading antiviral surveillance. In this issue of Cell, Ho etal. identify an additional consequence of this viral strategy: the acquisition of upstream start codons from host-derived sequences and subsequent translation of novel viral products.
