Abstract

Serials holdings statements constitute a neglected but essential part of serials standardization work. They cannot be considered in isolation from serial definitions, descriptions, formats, and systems. The principal problems are identified as the complexities of publishers'numbering schemes and publication patterns, and the lack of standards for holdings statements. The author describes the Canadian solution-a multipurpose, multilevel holdings format within the Canadian Mini-MARC Format: Serials. A brief outline of this holdings format and examples of holdings statements are appended.
