Abstract

Founded in 1983, the IMS Study Group ‘Cantus planus’ meets every two or three years to advance research on the chant of the Eastern and Western Church; its 80 to 100 members have developed on-line research tools (CAO-ECE, CANTUS, the NEUMES Project, RELICS) and reference websites, produced series of publications (Monumenta Monodica Medii Aevi, Monumenta Musicae Byzantinae, Corpus Troporum, the editions of saints’ offices or ‘historiae’ published by the Institute of Mediaeval Music), and recorded and reviewed recordings of chant. With 59 papers by three generations of scholars from both sides of the Atlantic, central Europe, Greece and Russia, the 13th meeting of the study group covered a broad range of more and less familiar topics: 8th to 21st century; Pennsylvania to Russia, Sweden to Ravenna.
