Abstract
En este artículo se presenta un manuscrito, anónimo e inédito, para historiar la búsqueda, emprendida por científicos mexicanos a mediados del siglo XIX, de un substituto nativo más eficaz y económico a la cantárida importada, un insecto con propiedades curativas. Se ubica a esta empresa científica en un contexto histórico donde la intersección de los saberes locales, la medicina decimonónica y las políticas imperiales revela una competencia internacional por especies nativas de América. Finalmente, damos a conocer la identidad del autor del mencionado estudio anónimo que dio pie a esta investigación.
