Abstract

A new species, Cantharellus tabernensis, is described from mixed pine and hardwood forests of southern Mississippi. A yellowish brown pileus with a dark brown disk and a bright orange hymenophore and stipe morphologically separate this chanterelle from other species. The new species is shown to have a long internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of the nuclear ribosomal DNA, consistent with other Can? tharellus species. Restriction fragment length poly? morphism analysis of the 5' end of the nuclear large ribosomal subunit gene supports the status of C. ta? bernensis as a distinct species.
