Abstract
A modified Lagrangian is proposed for the Abelian temporal gauge theory. The new scalar fields are coupled to delta i Ai with a real gamma parameter. For finite gamma , the canonical formalism is well defined and leads a quantum field theory with an indefinite metric-Hilbert space. The Gauss law is imposed for the physical subspace, where only two transverse propagating modes survive. The gauge field propagator with the alpha -prescription is obtained by analytic continuation of the gamma parameter.
