Abstract

The Trotskyist political movement, a pole of attraction for many of the intellectuals, is examined through biographical portraits of two of its leaders—James P. Cannon and Max Shachtman, who co-led the Communist League of America, the Workers Party of the United States, and the Socialist Workers Party during is first two years. Among the many controversies considered is the 1939-40 dispute that sundered this collaboration, a debate that involved the actions and then the class nature of the Soviet Union. Special attention to the part played by philosopher James Burnham.
