Abstract

Visceral leishmaniasis with amyloidosis was diagnosed in a dog in New York State which had been imported from Greece. Hyperglobulinemia, replacement of small lymphocytes in the spleen by plasma cells and amyloid as well as a predominance of plasma cells rather than lymphocytes around intracellular parasites suggested an imbalance in the immune system with an inappropriate increase in the humoral response and a decrease in cell-mediated immunity. On electron microscopy, plasma cells in the spleen were observed to contain amyloid-like fibrils associated with the Golgi region. Evidence that these fibrils were assembled in the Golgi apparatus of the plasma cells was presented.
