Abstract

The skills or characteristics I would contribute to the CEC Board of Directors if elected: As a special education director in a large District for 13 years, I gained experience that prepares me well for president elect. With a budget of $47 million, I managed a department that served 4000 students with a workforce of 900. The increase in personnel by 50%, despite shrinking funds, was deliberate and designed to ensure students’ needs were met. As a problem solver, my District depended on me to “figure out” services for kids. This skill has helped in managing finances, e.g. from 1 to 22 classes for kids with autism in 5 years, manage human resources, programs, and compliance (2 due process hearings in that time). I am flexible and look for creative solutions. I am collaborative and empower others to help in decision-making. Daily, I make many decisions but I also know how to lead the decision-making process for issues that require more time and thought. As a principal, I have the opportunity to look at special education differently. It has been become even more clear to me that our profession is in crisis when it comes to educating children in gen ed environments. I am passionate about this issue and feel it needs more attention than ever. I was a faculty member of Armstrong State University from 1995 to 2001. These six years provided me with another perspective of teacher education. I understand the complexities of training teachers and the importance of a university/school system collaborative. As a member of the Board of Directors from12-14, I gained direct knowledge about the current challenges of CEC. I understand the issues and have been part of recent decision-making that has occurred. In conclusion, I have experience as a leader. I understand tough decisions and understand the gravity of CEC’s current status. I have proven experience in guiding an organization through difficult times. I am dedicated, organized and reliable. I am committed to ensuring that CEC continues to be the premier association for special and general education professionals.
