Abstract

The existence of cancer stem cells continues to be extensively debated among scientists, and given the mounting evidence, it is an area that needs further examination. The possible reason for resistance to current treatment modalities in cancer is that we have yet to discover a method to eradicate cancer stem cells. This chapter describes the theory of cancer stem cells, portrays the role of cancer stem cells in radiation and chemotherapy resistance, and describes methods for their isolation. Finally, it presents current knowledge on cancer stem cells in solid organ tumors and discusses the limitations of current isolation strategies.
