Abstract
The prevalence of pancreatic cancer is difficult to determme because of the considerable problems in making a clinical diagnosis and the frequency with which it is confused with cancer of the common bile duct. Cancer of the pancreas accounts for about 0.5 % of all hospital admissions and between I % and 2% of malignant tumours found at necropsy. The disease is twice as common in males, and the incidence reaches its maximum in patients over the age of 60 years. The cause of pancreatic cancer is unknown.
