Abstract

Cancer incidence among 6372 men employed at an asbestos-cement factory since 1943, of which 5686 were in jobs exposing them to asbestos, have been followed up to December 1976 or to their deaths. Sources of information were payrolls, population files, and a nationwide cancer registry based on hospital notifications supplemented with information from death registration and occasionally from other sources. Numbers of cancer cases observed and expected are given on a cohort basis for subsequent periods of 5 years up to 24 years after the beginning of employment. Calculations have been based on incidence data for 5-year age groups for men in Danish provincial towns. An excess of cases observed over expected numbers was found for the following sites: lung: 47 27.3 ; larynx and trachea: 6 2.9 ; prostate: 14 7.7 ; and stomach: 14 9.2 .
